Abstract:
A lecture presented at a study day held at Yad Vashem in 2002. Discusses the leadership and functioning of the Slovakian Working Group, which was set up in early 1942 by several members of the Bratislava Jewish Council who opposed cooperation with the Nazis. The group members first attempted to cancel deportations in February 1942, but their pleas to government and Church authorities failed; thereafter, they concentrated on helping individuals. Describes the activities of Gisi Fleischmann and Rabbi Michael Dov Weissmandel. In summer 1942 they managed to bribe the Nazis, through Dieter Wisliceny, to temporarily stop the deportations. They then attempted to stop deportations throughout Europe with the Europa Plan, which failed to materialize. After the Slovak uprising of 1944 most of the Working Group members were deported to the Sereď labor camp. Fleischmann perished there; Weissmandel jumped from a train headed for Auschwitz and survived.
