Italy Relations
Abstract:
Examines Italy's relations with Sephardic Jewry throughout the Mediterranean region, based on the belief that they had power in the budding Zionist movement. Italy wanted to create an organized body of Sephardi Jews, preferably within the Zionist movement, which would then promote Italian commercial and cultural interests in the Middle East. Gives details regarding Italian Jews (e.g. Angelo Levi-Bianchini and Guigo Yarak, both of them Jewish Italian naval officers) as well as Jews in Izmir who had contacts with influential Jews in the region and who attempted to further Italy's goals. In the end, all of their efforts came to nothing in terms of a unified organization of Sephardic Jewry, but these negotiations had an effect on Italian diplomatic policies in the 1930s-40s. .
