Abstract:
Presents a picture of the apocalyptic understanding of the Holocaust of Rabbi Harlap (1883-1951), head of the Merkaz Harav yeshiva in Jerusalem from 1935. Already in the 1920s-30s, he stated that the nations of the world represented the forces of evil which would try to destroy the Jews. God remained with the people of Israel in their suffering; the mutual love of God and the Jews would lead to redemption. All Jewish lives lost were considered to have been sacrificed for God. With the ultimate redemption would come consolation, where "we will see... that all the difficult and bitter suffering was worth it."
