Abstract:
Analyzes the cases of 86 Austrians who have been honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Gentiles. Some of them helped Jews to emigrate between 1938-41, and some of them hid Jews. In 1943-44, Allied bombings destroyed Austrian homes and forced many Jews out of hiding; only 219 of those managed to hide in Vienna until the end of the war. Of the 86 rescuers, 11 were managers of firms in the ghettos and camps, who used their positions to save Jews. 36 were residents of Vienna, mostly women, who hid Jewish friends.28 were Austrians who, toward the end of the war, helped Jews who were either imprisoned, were engaged in forced labor, or had been sent on death marches. Eight other cases are Austrian exiles who helped Jews in other countries. Describes characteristics of the rescuers, types of rescue activities, the dangers and hardships involved, and the motives of the rescuers.
