Abstract:
On the basis of published Vatican documents and secondary sources, discusses contacts of Monsignor Roncalli, the apostolic delegate in Turkey, with Jewish representative organizations in Palestine during 1939-45, focusing on the activities of Yitzhak Herzog, Chief Rabbi of Palestine, and the Palestine rescue mission in Istanbul. Roncalli's part in rescue activities for the Jews of Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy, and Yugoslavia involved a genuine effort to help endangered Jews by direct appeals for support from the Vatican's political authorities, calls on powerful apostolic delegates to use their influence, and pleas to the heads of the relevant states. Although Roncalli was theologically opposed to Jewish settlement in Palestine, he did not reject rescue attempts involving immigration to Palestine.
