Abstract:
Based on his diary and on writings of others in the ghetto, discusses the character and activities of Adam Czerniaków (1880-1942), the head of the Judenrat from October 1939-July 1942. During this time, Czerniaków only gradually began to understand the seriousness of his position. In early 1942 he initiated a "war on poverty" and forced the wealthier Jews in the ghetto to help those in need, but his efforts came too late. Although some writers in the ghetto accused Czerniaków of being interested mainly in his own power, notes that he occasionally attempted to alleviate Jewish suffering through bribery of Nazi officials. Just before the deportations of July 1942, members of the Judenrat and Czerniaków's wife were taken hostage to ensure his cooperation; seeing no way out of the situation, Czerniaków chose to commit suicide. Ghetto writers called it an honorable act, but maintained that he could instead have told the Jews to resist deportation or at least have instructed the Jewish police not to cooperate with the Nazis.
