Kurzfassung:
The Cuban Jewish community, which was formed in the 1920s, had no tradition of religious, political, or social antisemitism. Discusses the general lack of antisemitism during the democratic regimes (1944-52), the dictatorship of Batista (1952-59), and under Castro. In 1946-48 there were bouts of antisemitism, stimulated mainly by the local Arab population who propagandized against Israel. But in early 1949 Cuba recognized Israel and relations were good up through Castro's regime. Castro's attitude deteriorated as a result of pressure from the Soviet Union and Arab countries. Notes the constant existence of social discrimination stemming from the Spanish immigrant upper classes which filtered down to the lower classes as well.
