Abstract:
Examines three early postwar literary testimonies of the Holocaust written by non-Jewish Polish writers: short stories by Kornel Filipowicz (1913-1990), published in his first collection "The Unmoved Landscape"; the short story "Ponary - 'Baza'" by Józef Mackiewicz (1902-1985); and Tadeusz Borowski's "This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen". The common themes of these stories are the emotional impact of the genocide of the Jews on the Polish witnesses, and the morally perverting effect of the witnesses' inaction in the face of the genocide - or even reluctant collaboration with it (as in Borowski's story).
