Abstract:
A paper presented at the "Remembering for the Future" conference, Oxford, July 1988. In the light of the theological thought of Jean Améry and Emil Fackenheim, examines the link between Christian tradition and the Holocaust, and the behavior of the Church and individual Christians during the Holocaust period in Europe and in the USA. Contends that apostasy abounded in Christian civilization from 1933 to 1945; fully authentic Christians were too few to prevent the extermination of the Jews. Discusses the rescue of Jews by Christians, not necessarily practicing believers, and in particular the case of the Protestant town of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon in southern France, where nearly all its citizens, led by the Trocmé family, actively participated in the rescue of several hundred Jews.
