Abstract:
Based on R. Barthes' theories of narrative analysis, contends that the Israeli press uses the myth of the Holocaust and the revival of the Jewish state as a point of reference in its coverage of crisis situations (e.g. wars, terrorist attacks). It is used not only to cope with crisis, but also to reinforce the image of the State of Israel as the only defender of the Jewish people, and the only answer to all its miseries. Examples are given from the major Israeli papers in the period 1968-78, such as "Ha'aretz, " "Davar, " "Al Hamishmar, " "Hatzofeh, " "Yediot Ahronot, " and "Maariv."
