Abstract:
Until recently, the Holocaust in the territories of the Soviet Union (east of the western border of 1938) remained "terra incognita" for historians because of lack of sources. Only a small part of the documentation kept in Soviet archives reached the West in the pre-"perestroika" period (documents provided for the Ludwigsburg Center in West Germany, Ehrenburg's archives, etc.). Now, when a great deal of new documents (Soviet, German, and Jewish) have become available, historians must revise some of their conceptions of the events of the Holocaust and some of the estimates of the numbers of victims. The new sources also propose new areas of research.
