Abstract:
Deals with postwar judicial procedures in France against war criminals, and the place in these trials of anti-Jewish measures as an argument against the accused. Exemplifies the problem with the trials of Pétain, Xavier Vallat, and Amédée Bussière (chief commissioner of the Paris police). Concludes that the Vichy authorities were not judged for their participation in the extermination of the Jews and that their personal responsibility - e.g. for roundups and other anti-Jewish actions - were not taken into account during the trials. According to these French judicial procedures, only the Nazi occupiers were responsible for anti-Jewish measures.
