Abstract:
A paper delivered at a conference in Jerusalem, 1988. Analyzes Polish prose (written by Polish and Jewish writers) on the Holocaust period, among them short stories and novels by Jerzy Andrzejewski, Tadeusz Borowski, Kazimierz Brandys, Adolf Rudnicki. Relates to the motifs of the presence or absence of God, the story of Job, comparisons with the fate of Poles, and moral dilemmas encountered by people in extreme situations. Analyzes attitudes of some Polish heroes in the face of the tragedy of the Jews, and moral reflections on the importance of dying "for something", as was the case for Poles who died fighting the Nazis. The Warsaw ghetto insurrection is presented and glorified in Polish prose as a way of negation of "a death without sense".
