Abstract: Traces the life and work of Spies (1897-1997). She was deported from München to Theresienstadt in the summer of 1942 and survived three years there to return to München, where she lived for the rest of her life. In Theresienstadt she began to write poetry; she felt that expressing her suffering helped her cope with it, but over and above that she strove to achieve the best poetic form of which she was capable. After the war, she continued to write poetry as well as a novel and a memoir on Theresienstadt. Her writing is straightforward, in contrast to that of other Holocaust poets, showing that it is not impossible to describe the Holocaust experience. Quotes generously from Spies's poetry.
