Abstract:
Emperor Joseph II's preliminary proposal (13 May 1781) for new regulations regarding the Jews gave rise to a lively pamphlet debate. Several weeks before Dohm's famous tract, Leopold Alois Hoffmann (ca. 1748-1806) published in Prague "Über die Juden und deren Duldung", in which he refuted common arguments against the Jews and upheld the universality of human rights. He was immediately attacked by other writers and defended by others. The most radical attack against Christian Jew-hatred and in support of full equality for Jews was Joseph Friedrich von Keppler's "Man gebe den Juden diejenigen Freyheiten, Die ihnen vermöge der Rechte der Menschheit zu kommen" (Vienna, 1781). In opposition to him was an anonymous pamphlet "Untersuchung der Frage: Ob die Juden nicht zur Handarbeit, und Erlernung ehrlicher Professionen anzuhalten sind" (Prague, 1781) and Ignaz Klingler's "Über die Unnutz- und Schädlichkeit der Juden" (Prague, 1782), which repeat traditional stereotypes, including the blood libel. Pp. 143-144 list all the known pamphlets in this debate.
