Kurzfassung:
Discusses the fictional treatment of the historical figure of the court Jew Joseph Süss Oppenheimer. Since his execution in the 18th century, he has served as an important figure for the expression of German and, to a lesser extent, Jewish attitudes toward the assimilation of German Jews. After a historical account and a discussion of contemporary works, focuses on the novels by Wilhelm Hauff and Lion Feuchtwanger, the British film "Jew Suess", and the Nazi film "Jud Süss". Concludes that most of the fictional versions of Süss's story are permeated with antisemitism, particularly antisemitic stereotypes. Notes that no artistic narrative presented Süss as an economic revolutionary, but all dealt with the issue of his being an alien in German society.
