Abstract:
The film "Jud Süss" was directed by Veit Harlan and produced in 1940 by Universum Film, on the orders of Joseph Goebbels. It was intended to convince the German and European public that the Jews must be destroyed. The Nazis realized that film was an effective way to reach a large percentage of the population, including those who were uneducated. "Jud Süss" was one of the 30 most popular German films in 1940-42. Joseph Süss Oppenheim was chosen by Goebbels as the film's subject because he epitomized the "evil Jew" - he was involved in finance, accused of treason and fraud, and executed in 1738 for having relations with a Christian woman. After the war, Harlan escaped punishment by insisting that had been forced to make the film.
