Abstract: Surveys Australia's immigration policy between 1933-1947. Although several officials were sympathetic to the needs of the Jewish refugees, and despite Australia's need for immigrants, the public reacted with indifference or hostility to the idea of accepting Jewish immigrants. The government took a negative stance for fear of an influx of lower-class Jews which would arouse racial tensions. Jewish organizations pressed for admission of a select number of "useful citizens". In the postwar period, the number of Jewish DPs allowed entry was restricted, due to an outcry that Australia was being used as a "dumping-ground for Jews".

Abstract: Describes the contribution of Camilla Wedgwood (1901-1955), the British anthropologist, to help settle German Jewish refugees in Australia. Wedgwood had a position at the University of Sydney since 1932, and also did research in Papua New Guinea. She was an adviser to the government on its policy toward Papua New Guinea. Discusses her attempts to influence government policy in regard to receiving Jewish refugees from Germany, a policy which was based on antisemitic prejudice toward the Jews who were viewed as a non-assimilable, parasitc group of people.
