Traces how World War I affected the Jews of Galicia and Bukovina, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Deals with the arrival of the Ukrainian Cossacks in 1914; the Russian army's occupation; the reconquest by the Austrian army in 1915; the death of Emperor Franz Josef, protector of the Jews, in 1916; the collapse of the Hapsburg monarchy, and the battles and pogroms of the Polish war of independence in 1918-19. These stormy events increasingly undermined the Jewish world of Galicia and Bukovina. Conflicts with other ethnic groups escalated, and feelings of doom increased. The hardships endured in 1914-16, including mass expulsions and deportations, pogroms by conquerors and locals, being targeted as scapegoats for Russia and Austria, and suspicions of espionage by both sides, appeared relatively minor compared to the catastrophes of 1918-19. Notes that later, after the Holocaust, the suffering of Jews in World War I were blotted out of Jewish awareness.
