Abstract:
Describes the operation to rescue the Danish Jews with the aid of numerous volunteers who were organized to warn them, hide them, and transport them to the harbors and pay the fishermen (who risked their lives) for their passage to Sweden. The 481 Jews who were arrested and deported to Theresienstadt were protected there by the Danish government and the Red Cross. Suggests that the German High Commissioner Werner Best purposely leaked information about the impending deportation to the Danes. Posits that he wanted to make Denmark "judenfrei" without risking the anger of the population, and perhaps also to exculpate himself in the eyes of the Allies in the case of a German defeat.
