Abstract:
The Yiddish philologist, linguist, and co-founder of the yivo, Nokhem Shtif, lived in Weimar Berlin from 1922 until 1925. During this period, he published a series of feuilletons for the New York daily Der morgen zhurnal in which he reflected on his life there. Using motifs from and the structure of the Hasidic tale, Shtif muses about modern life (e.g. the emergence of the radio, about art and literature, coffeehouse culture, resort culture) and their consequences for the individual, the society, and Yiddish culture. As recurrent theme appears his intricate situation as an outsider both in German society and the Yiddish émigré community. He alludes to this experience of estrangement by using forms of allegory and parody, by means of sarcasm and self-reflection.
