Abstract:
In 1900, the small Jewish community of Coro in Venezuela was attacked verbally by local Church and state authorities. This happened at a time of violent confrontation between the political establishment and opposition groups. The Jews were blamed for collaborating with those who challenged the existing order. Antisemitic accusations were made, such as that the Jews drink the blood of Christian children and that they have a pact with the Devil. States that ethnic intolerance, religious obscurantism, and especially economic competition, motivated these attacks.
