Abstract:
Relates Konrad Adenauer's close friendships with prominent Jews in his hometown Köln, his support, as the mayor of Köln (in 1917–1933), for Jewish and Zionist organizations, and his defense of the Jews against the Nazis during the Weimar period, for which he was vilified by Nazi propaganda. On 4 April 1933, he was officially dismissed as mayor and his bank accounts were frozen. He had no money, no home and no job. During the Nazi period, he and his family lived in virtual seclusion, aided by friends and also by the Catholic Church. He narrowly escaped deportation in 1944. Restored to office after the war, he sent busses to bring back Köln Jews from the concentration camps.
