Abstract:
Pt. 1 (pp. 3-9), by Alice Eckardt, contends that the contemporary hostile or super-critical stances of most of the Churches (or at least their leaders) toward the State of Israel are rooted in Christian theological principles which evolved from the first century onward. Surveys the development of assumptions such as that the covenant was abrogated by God as proven by the destruction of the Temple, that Christians are the new people of God, that Jews were to be exiled forever, and that Christianity is a universal religion while attachment to the Land of Israel is particularistic. Pt. 2 (pp. 9-14), by A. Roy Eckardt, surveys current developments in the Catholic and Protestant Churches. Criticizes aspects of the Vatican II statements, but notes increasing positive gestures on the part of the Vatican with regard to the legitimacy of the State of Israel. Notes, though, Catholic concern for the plight of Palestinians without regard to the PLO's stated plan for the destruction of Israel. Most Protestant Churches ignore the issue of the State of Israel in official statements. Mentions positive statements by Dutch and Rhineland synods, and negative reports by British and U.S. Church bodies. Proposes that the Churches affirm their support of a democratic Israel against the non-democratic and anti-democratic world.
