Abstract:
In the early 18th century there were changes in the Church's policies toward the Jews. Provincial synods, meant to take place every three to four years, were no longer held. The diocesan synods that were convened between 1700-30 therefore took on more importance. The bishops mainly invoked and enforced old laws dating back to the 16th century concerning Jews; their main aim was to protect Christians from Jewish influence. The 18th century saw an increase in the number of accusations of ritual murder which ended with guilty verdicts. The Church changed its attitude toward conversion and made more efforts to convert Jews. These activities were mainly a result of private initiatives of particular bishops or convents, and not planned policies of the Catholic Church in Poland. Despite official prohibitions, there were economic and other day-to-day contacts between the clergy and the Jews.
