Abstract: Disagrees with exegetes who view John's negative stance toward the Jews as symbolic and not directed against real Jews. Emphasizes that John equates the Jews with the negative pole of his dualistic rhetoric, and that later anti-Jewish interpretations harmonize with the tenor of his text. John's description of the relationship between Christians and Jews is not a portrayal of historical circumstances, but an explanation of the conflict between the two poles (positive and negative) of his Christology, soteriology, and narration. States that the Gospel's Christology does not offer salvation to infidels, i.e. the Jews. Concludes that, although anti-Judaism is not the Gospel's main goal, the fact that John identifies the Jews with darkness, death, and infidelity, and calls them them the devil's children, has had a lasting impact on readers of the New Testament. The tendency by exegetes today to put quotation marks around John's use of the word Jew is viewed as an attempt to whitewash the Gospel after the Holocaust.

Abstract: Suggests that although Cullmann (1902-1999, Protestant theologian) did not deal with the subject of anti-Judaism in John, his analysis of the Gospel makes it possible to speculate on what his position would have been. Cullmann argues that the Gospel must be read on two levels: as the story of Jesus and as its repetition in the story of the Johannine community. Jesus' reported harsh words against "the Jews" might accordingly not be Jesus' own, but rather the reaction of the community to its expulsion from the synagogue. Also, Cullmann saw the Johannine community as a marginal Jewish group; thus one could argue that the controversy was intra-Jewish, not anti-Jewish. This is a view shared by most present-day scholars. Reinhartz, however, suggests that the author of the text was not reacting to a supposed Jewish hostility (for which she finds counter-indications), but trying to persuade the community to keep its distance from the Jews; and that although the polemic is that of a Jew against other Jews, it nevertheless is decidedly anti-Jewish.
