Abstract:
Deals with passages on the Jews in the "Julian Romance", a fictional work about Julian the Apostate (361-363). The Syriac text is preserved in a 6th-century manuscript in the British Library (MS 14641), and was translated into English in 1928. Concludes that the work reflects the anti-Jewish climate in the Eastern Roman Empire, specifically Edessa, in the first half of the 5th century. Julian is blamed for the loss of parts of the empire. The Christian text associates him with non-Christians, not only pagans but also Jews. The latter are viewed as having compromised their monotheism and reverted to paganism, with Julian as their savior.
