Kurzfassung:
Based on a paper presented in Nuremberg, October 1993. Discusses the treatment of the passion in present-day Protestant religious education as a source of antisemitism. Suggests that despite good intentions, educators may stress negative aspects of Judaism in order to point up contrasting values in Christianity. In general, it is now accepted that Jesus was condemned to death by the Romans, not "the" Jews. But Jewish guilt for his death is now projected backward to his disputes with the Pharisees; Jesus represents social reform and freedom as against Jewish legalism. Analyzes treatment of the subject in the curriculum and textbooks now in use in Bavarian schools, concluding that while the curriculum presents Judaism fairly (though too scantily), textbooks contribute to negative generalizations about Pharisees, Jews, and Judaism. Certain textbooks give the impression that Jesus was condemned by the whole Jewish people. In general, the textbooks do not sufficiently stress the Jewish roots of Jesus and of his teachings.
