Abstract: Traces the problematic relationship of the Church and of Christians to the Jews from the New Testament through the 20th century, including the deicide accusation and the claim of supersession, pogroms and expulsions. Suggests that religious anti-Judaism made the public receptive to racist antisemitism. Thus the majority of churchmen and church members failed to protest against the Holocaust; some were among the perpetrators, although others (including Pope Pius XII) rescued Jews. Vatican II was a turning point in the relationship. Discusses the theological problem raised by the Holocaust. Points out that many Jewish victims held fast to their faith in God even while accusing him. Affirms that God's ways are inscrutable, but it is legitimate to ask where he was in Auschwitz, and Christians need not contradict Jews who say that the world is unredeemed. Outlines changes required in Christian teaching to bring about an attitude of respect for Judaism.
