Abstract:
The leadership of the Catholic Church did not dictate any clear-cut policy, probably to avoid clashes with the varied opinions among Church officials and lay members but also, very likely, as a precaution in case of changing political conditions. There were officials and theologians who looked for ways to reconcile Catholicism with Nazism, and others who led an outspoken campaign against racism and antisemitism. In general, the Church establishment expressed nationalistic and antisemitic opinions. Retrospectively, it appears that the position of the Austrian Church during 1934-38 affected the conduct of the Austrian population after the Anschluss.
