Abstract:
Discusses efforts of Pope Benedict XVI to consecrate Pius XII as a saint, noting that Israel expressed objection to the consecration already in 1998, and that others, including Catholics, have also objected recently. The Vatican has not yet opened its archives from the Holocaust period, despite requests from researchers. A dispute between the Vatican's ambassador to Israel, Antonio Franco, and Yad Vashem in 2007 led to the "discovery" of a document allegedly initialled by Pius, showing his support for the rescue of Jews. Since then, the Vatican's Secretary of State, Tarcisio Bertone, has accused the Jews of conducting a plot against Pius, but there is no basis for this accusation. Views these recent developments as part of the efforts of Pope Benedict XVI to appease Muslims after he criticized Islamic extremism in a speech in Ratisbon.
