Abstract:
Describes the political factors which influenced the attitudes of Mexico and Brazil toward Jewish immigration, especially during the 1930s when Jews could still leave Europe. Focuses on the government of Lázaro Cárdenas in Mexico and that of Getúlio Vargas in Brazil. Points out that the relatively progressive Mexico absorbed only a few hundred Jews (despite Cárdenas' willingness to allow Jews into his country), probably because of xenophobia and antisemitism amongst the masses and their influence on the government. Brazil absorbed a much larger number of Jews, despite restrictive immigration laws and an antisemitic bureaucracy.
