Abstract:
Compares ritual murder trials in Central Europe between 1882-1902. Notes that while accusations of ritual murder were widespread, there were only a few trials. Most of them took place in small market towns with relatively few Jews. Nevertheless, these localities were affected by important social and economic changes taking place at the time. Contends that hostile inter-ethnic relations were not necessary to produce accusations of ritual murder. Mentions two trials of antisemites in Bohemia, in Polná in 1892 and in Kolín in 1897. In the first case, the state defended the Jewish religion against defamation; in both cases, non-Jews were concerned with Jewish sensibilities and cooperated with Jews to oppose antisemitism.
