Abstract:
In 1986 the State of Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles issued a posthumous pardon to Leo Frank, the Jew lynched in Atlanta in 1915. The local press had incited feeling against Frank as a symbol of alien, northern industrial exploitation of the South. However, the Board refused to exonerate Frank, since his innocence would have implied the guilt of a Black caretaker now dead and unable to defend himself. Local Black organizations approved the final compromise pardon which was based on the fact that Frank was denied a fair trial because of antisemitic prejudice.
