Abstract:
The paper proposes a kind of “progress report” for the edition of the De fide in the “Sources chrétiennes” collection. To this end, three sets of issues are briefly reviewed. (1) The constitution of the Latin text. The critical examination of the principles of the Faller edition (CSEL 78, 1962), with suggestions of some changes. (2) About the chronology: an examination of the relative and absolute dating problems of the two groups of books constituting the treaty (I-II; III‑V), and reflections on the evolution of the relations between Ambrose and Gratian, at least in part the “sponsor” of the work. (3) On doctrinal aspects: an examination of Ambrose’s exegesis of some central biblical texts and his use of two key words (unitas; substantia), from a neo-Nicene perspective.
