    Abstract: Racist theories in 19th century France and Germany reflected the decadence of bourgeois society. Demonstrates the negative depiction of the Jew in French and German literature - e.g. in Gustav Freytag's "Soll und Haben" (1885). In Wilhelm Raabe's "Der Hungerpastor" (1864), the negative characteristics of the Jew are blamed on emancipation which allowed him to integrate into society and led to his moral failure. The converted Jew is shown to be more repulsive than before his conversion. Compares these motifs with antisemitism in French literature, analyzing passages from the brothers Goncourt's novel "Manette Salomon" (1867) in which their aversion to Jews and their racist prejudice are obvious. Antisemitic expressions can also be found in Emile Zola's early works. Contends that these writers were expressing prevailing opinions in bourgeois society.

    Abstract: Discusses Jewish figures in literary works by the 19th-century Austrian writers Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach and Ferdinand von Saar, who are considered to have been objective vis-à-vis the Jews in their works and were both opposed to antisemitism. However, their Jewish characters are portrayed using anti-Jewish clichés and stereotypes, which are here described.
