Kurzfassung:
A paper presented at an international workshop held in London, September 1987. Tracing Céline’s literary and ideological evolution, especially his antisemitism and pro-Nazi collaborationism, notes the eruption of a persecution complex after 1937, which led also to racial hatred and an obsession regarding a world Jewish conspiracy. Asserts that despite his collaborationist attitudes, there is no evidence that Céline was guilty of denouncing Jews, communists, or anti-Nazis. Concludes that due to Céline’s great literary achievements (including his postwar writings), it is possible to argue that his commitment to his art was deeper and stronger than his ideological beliefs.
