Kurzfassung:
Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners" provoked an unprecedented controversy in German society over the antisemitic origins of the Holocaust. Contends that, despite its shortcomings, this book has brought important new perspectives to Holocaust studies - e.g. in that it focused on the motives of the perpetrators, and on the average Nazi rather than the elites. The first media reaction, and even academic reactions, to the book in Germany was completely negative. In their portrayal of Goldhagen's alleged anti-German hostility, many participants in the debate exhibited covert anti-Jewish prejudices. Suggests a psychoanalytical explanation of such "secondary antisemitism": unmastered guilt feelings are projected against "imaginary accusers" who remind the public of the Nazi past. Goldhagen has destroyed all efforts of the Germans to recreate a positive national identity, to regain collective narcissism.
