Abstract:
Describes the situation in Cernauţi (Czernowitz) after the First World War when Bukovina became part of Romania. The Romanian language was introduced as obligatory in the schools and administration. According to the new legislation in 1926, non-Romanian pupils (Jews, Ukrainians, Germans) were required to pass matriculation exams in Romanian language and history. This measure provoked conflicts. 124 Jewish pupils out of 184 did not pass the exams, and this caused violent street demonstrations in which two professors were attacked. The events resulted in trial of the pupils and an antisemitic campaign. During the trial, a young activist in the Antisemitic League from Iaşi, Neculai Totu, killed one of the Jewish pupils, David Falik. Presents the discussion in the press between liberals and nationalists concerning these events. Totu was acquitted of the murder.
