Abstract: Describes Spain's attitude toward Sephardic Jews after 1881, and the public debate over their return to Spain, especially in the context of European antisemitism. States that the government's policy was ambiguous: while officially encouraging closer cultural and economic ties with the Sephardim in different countries, and granting them naturalization (1924), in practice the Spanish authorities were reluctant to allow them to return for fear of an antisemitic backlash. Discusses, also, Spain’s role in the rescue of Jewish refugees during World War II despite its official pro-Nazi, extreme-right regime.
