Abstract:
Describes the fears and vulnerability of Jews in Parisian suburbs with large Muslim populations. Jewish school children are moving from public to private Jewish schools, and the entire department of Seine-Saint-Denis is gradually losing its Jewish inhabitants. They are moving to safer French communities, or, as in the case of 2,000 individuals per year, emigrating to Israel. In addition to the threatening atmosphere in schools and on the street, interviewees mention active pro-Palestinian and anti-Zionist stances of communist mayors of various suburbs, which has increased tensions, as a reason for leaving. Some suburbs, like Creteil, continue to have a flourishing Jewish community, despite a strong Muslim presence. Sarcelles, where a kosher supermarket was attacked in 2012 and an Islamic terror group was arrested, keeps receiving special attention by the French authorities, including the Interior Minister. Events there show that French converts to Islam constitute the latest threat to Jews.
