Abstract:
Despite widespread belief that antisemitism had died in Auschwitz and is impossible in a post-Holocaust world, it returned in the guise of a "new antisemitism", merging with anti-Zionism, and "secondary antisemitism", due to the fact that Jews are a reminder of various countries' responsibility for the Holocaust. The fight against this new wave of antisemitism is futile unless three things are taken into account: that antisemitism and anti-Zionism cannot be disentangled; that there is a phenomenon of "Jewish antisemitism" that fulfills an important legitimizing function in current antisemitic discourse; and that the "new antisemitism" is not a phenomenon "sui generis", but the product of a transformation and contextualization of the "old antisemitism".
