Abstract:
In June 1945, Victor Gollancz, the left-wing British Jewish publisher, published a pamphlet attacking the British government for its failure to rescue Jews during the war and refusal to admit Holocaust survivors to Palestine. He also mentioned rising antisemitism in England. Describes a number of highly critical letters sent to Gollancz in reaction to the pamphlet, expressing popular antisemitism in the form of complaints about the Jews' behavior during the war, including evasion of army service, blackmarket trading, and being generally clannish, selfish, and greedy. Six of the letters are reproduced on pp. 83-95. Concludes that despite the influence of a strong national antisemitic tradition, the letter writers were little affected by racial and conspiratorial antisemitism, and generally demanded that the Jews assimilate.
Note:
Pp. include six letters received by V. Gollancz after publishing his pamphlet against the British government in 1945.
