Abstract:
Examines activities of Jewish organizations in Vienna in the 1930s, including the Österreichisch-Israelitische Union, which concentrated on bringing cases of antisemitism to court and refuting anti-Jewish stereotypes, and the Bund jüdischer Frontsoldaten Österreichs, which stressed its patriotism and organized self-defense groups. In 1935 leaders of Jewish organizations protested against the separation of Jews and non-Jews in Viennese schools, to no avail, and anti-Jewish measures increased thereafter. Pogroms took place and Jewish organizations gave up most of their activities even before the Anschluss in 1938.
