Abstract: Following the liberation of Denmark in May 1945, the refugees who fled to Sweden in 1943 returned. About 200-300 Jewish refugees found themselves without a home or job to return to. Some of them were housed in the Øregaard Gymnasium, in a northern suburb of Copenhagen, during May-June 1945. In September, parents of students at the Gymnasium insisted that the Jews be moved, rather than the students. In October, the Jews were moved to a building that only 2-3 months before had been declared "unfit for human habitation". States that there are undeniable antisemitic tones in the various statements of the local authorities and in the press.

Abstract: Discusses Danish editions of the "Protocols" found in the Royal Danish Library, published between 1920-86. The first edition was published under a pseudonym; in 1933 the publisher revealed herself as Gudrun Rørdam, in the magazine "National-Socialisten" in which extracts of the "Protocols" appeared in 1933. Different versions were published by Aage H. Andersen in 1935 and 1938; in 1938 he was sentenced to 80 days in prison for his views. However, in 1940 and 1941 he published the "Protocols" again. In 1986, the Danish National Socialist Movement (Danmarks National Socialistiske Bevaegelse) published a reprint of Andersen's edition.

Abstract: In autumn 1989, Ahmed Rami, the director of the Radio Islam radio station in Stockholm, was convicted of conducting a smear campaign against an ethnic group - the Jews - and sentenced to six months in prison. Called as an expert witness, Jan Bergman, professor of Religious History at Uppsala University, made a series of sensational allegations about Judaism, some of them belonging to the classic antisemitic repertory (e.g. ritual murder). Bergman's main supporter was Sigbert Axelson, the head of the Theological Institution of Uppsala University. Contends that the most disquieting aspect of the case was the lack of reaction of the university establishment. As the case attracted media attention, the Dean of the Theological Faculty sought an independent assessment by Norwegian theologian Inge Lønning. In 1994 Lønning concluded that Bergman had been an irresponsible expert witness. Following this report, the board of the Theological Faculty publicly criticized Bergman, Axelson, the general faculty and overall university indifference. As a result, Axelson and the Dean, Carl Fredrik Hallencreutz, are leaving their posts as heads of faculty institutions in 1995.

Abstract: Examines the portrayal of Jews in medieval Danish texts written before 1515. The perception of Jews was fundamentally shaped by the idea that they had tortured and killed the Christian messiah. Discusses devotional texts, sermons, and passion stories which describe the Jews as Christ-killers. Other Jewish types found in this literature are effeminate, Satanic, and usurious Jews, as well as comparisons of Jews with animals. Certain negative words were used more frequently in descriptions of Jews than of non-Jews, which suggests a powerful association between such words and the perception of Jews.

Abstract: Analyzes four antisemitic caricatures published in Danish media in the first decade of the 21st century. The caricatures focus on the Middle East conflict and, using simplistic symbols, make it attractive to sympathize with Palestinians and unattractive to side with Jews. They go beyond mere Israel-critique; by applying traditional anti-Jewish stereotyopes and equating Israel and the Jews with the Nazis, they incite to hatred and fall into the category of antisemitism. The anti-Jewish stereotypes are of a Christian and racist nature.

Abstract: Discusses a 2004 Danish poll regarding, inter alia, attitudes towards Jews among five non-Western immigrant groups: Turks, Pakistanis, Somalians, Palestinians, and former Yugoslavs. The results show that each of the five groups is significantly more mistrustful of Jews than ethnic Danes. Only 18% of the Danes distrusted Jews, while 65% of the non-Western respondents did so. Over 70% of the immigrants did not want their children to marry Jews, while the percentage among the Danes was only 15. In all of the immigrant groups, Muslims were more hostile to Jews than were Christians. The poll also showed that attitudes toward Jews were not affected by gender, age, or degree of social marginalization, but rather by general xenophobia and degree of religiosity. Only among immigrants of Palestinian origin did the Israeli-Palestinian conflict affect attitudes toward Jews. Contends that the results contradict the common assumption that the Middle East conflict is one of the most important factors behind anti-Jewish sentiment.

Abstract: Discusses the effects of a Danish blasphemy trial in 1938, in which five local Nazis were convicted for writing and distributing antisemitic material. The material presented the Jews as an infectious disease and accused them of world conspiracy. States that a blasphemy clause was included in the Danish criminal law after a heated parliamentary debate in the 1920s. In 1938 the clause was implemented in order to counter antisemitic propaganda and charges were raised against a number of leading Danish Nazis. Analyzes how the trial was used in the Nazi media to strengthen antisemitic views and further the Nazi cause. Discusses the relevance of the 1938 trial for current debates on the future of the blasphemy clause. Argues that it exemplifies why authorities should interfere legally against radical and hateful political discourse, but concludes that it also shows that legal proceedings against hate speech produce more hate speech.
