Abstract: The first stage of the Syrian blood libel against Jews at the UN in 1991 revolved around Syrian Defense Minister Mustafa Tlass's antisemitic preface to the "historical" book, "The Matzah of Zion" (Damascus, 1985). Tlass attempted to justify the UN's "Zionism equals racism" resolution by referring to the 1840 Damascus Affair, when Jews were falsely accused of killing a priest in order to use his blood to make matzah. This supposed ritual murder is still referred to in Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East. Littman, who was the chief delegate of the World Union for Progressive Judaism to the United Nations in Geneva in 1985-91, tried to convince the UN to condemn the blood libel, but failed. He calls for removing a libelous plaque which exists in Damascus, repudiating the ridiculous accusations in regard to the Damascus Affair, and halting the spread of such antisemitic canards by a member of the UN.

Abstract: In April 1997, at the 53rd session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, representatives of some Islamic countries demanded censorship of the report submitted by the Special Rapporteur on Racism, Maurice Glélé-Ahanhanzo, because, from their viewpoint, the sub-section "Islamist and Arab Anti-Semitism" contained blasphemous references to Islam and the Qur'an. Examination of anti-Jewish pronouncements made by some Arabs and Islamists shows, however, that besides Christian and secular European antisemitic motifs (such as the blood libel and the world Jewish conspiracy accusation), they also use the Qur'an as a primary anti-Jewish source. Due to the intervention, the report was censored. Points out the dangers of censorship at the United Nations.
Note: An abridged version appeared in "Midstream" 44,2 (1998). Appeared also in "The Myth of Islamic Tolerance" (2005).
