Abstract:
While not denying that antisemitism has played a significant role in America, or that the Holocaust was a particularly traumatic event, Philip Roth has been skeptical about the understandable Jewish tendencies to see enemies everywhere and to embrace the Holocaust as a pillar of Jewish identity. Discusses the writer's work as a dialogue with the changing patterns of Holocaust reception in the USA, as discussed in Peter Novick's "The Holocaust in American Life". Among the works examined are "Eli the Fanatic", "Defender of the Faith", and "The Ghost Writer".
