Abstract:
Discusses the Leo Frank case (1913-15) as the first major example of a situation in which Blacks and Jews were in direct conflict in a life and death situation in the USA. Since both groups were considered marginal, either a Black or a Jew was conceivable as the murderer of the White female victim. Ultimately, the Jew Frank was chosen as the villain in terms of White images and prejudices. The illiteracy or "ignorance" of the Black employee was considered less dangerous than the "intellect" of the Jewish manager, who was found guilty and was lynched by a mob. In court and in the press the Black and the Jew were constantly compared, each appearing as "a distorted negative image of the other."
