Abstract: The attacks on Jewish intellectuals in fascist Italy, which began in 1938, were carried out in different ways and on different fronts. Works by Jewish authors were removed from catalogues of scientific publications. Jews were not invited to participate in academic conferences, bookstore owners removed works of Jewish authors from their windows, and publishers refused to publish new Jewish authors. Jewish publishers were not allowed to operate. The Italian state promoted this persecution through legislation and political initiatives. Corporations such as the Federazione Fascista Industriali Editori and the Accademia d'Italia were instrumental in assuring the enforcement of the anti-Jewish laws. The appendix (pp. 213-219) contains letters and documents.

Abstract: Despite Mussolini's official declarations in 1932 denying the existence of antisemitism in Italy and discriminatory policies toward Jews, the fact is that from the same year Jewish scholars were excluded from the Accademia d'Italia because of their religion. This was the case with the Jewish archaeologist Alessandro Della Seta, who for two consecutive years received first place in the internal elections to the Academy, but was never accepted due to Mussolini's veto. Notes the early existence of an anti-Jewish policy in the Academy, which began in 1929 and increased between 1932-33. The appendix contains facsimiles of documents.
