Abstract:
Discusses Katz's works on Jewish-Christian relations, anti-Jewish attitudes, and the failure of Jewish integration into German society. Katz perceived events in Jewish history, including the Holocaust, as part of the "longue durée" of Jewish life in the shadow of Christian antisemitism. He felt that total emancipation of the Jews in 19th-century Europe was impossible due to deep-rooted antisemitism. Jewish integration in Germany failed because of Jewish unwillingness to abandon Judaism entirely, but this was a result of Christian negative attitudes toward Jews. Although Jewish exclusiveness increased the antagonism of non-Jews, it was not the cause of traditional Christian antisemitism.
